Amanda identified "Orion Ray" on September 21, 2012 at "Manta Village" (aka Keauhou Bay). He was a young male with a 5' wingspan and was fearless and came right up to her lights. She decided to name him Orion Ray because:
- Orion is the son of Poseidon who is the "God of the Sea". Orion was a mighty hunter; he has a bow and arrow that he uses sometimes and the belly pattern on Orion Ray looks like a bow and arrow.
- she wanted to name the Manta Ray "Orion Ray" after her brother Ryan. Since there was already a "Ryan Ray", she chose something that sounded as close to him as possible.
